COSGRAVE FAMILY TREE

Thomas was the son of James COSGRAVE and was born in 1821 in Glendalough, County Clare, Ireland. Thomas arrived in South Australia on the “Navarino” on the 16th of July 1857, aged 36 years. His nominee was William BOWMAN. (William had settled in Finniss, Section 2727, Hundred of Kondoparinga, this was later purchased by William Rogers who named the property “Sandergrove”). The Ships Register has his name as Thomas COSGRIFF.

Thomas met Miss Mary BYRNE and on the 19th of February 1858 their first child was born; Patrick Phillip.

Thomas and Mary BYRNE (BURNS) married on the 30th of May 1858 in Bulls Creek, SA. On their marriage certificate, Thomas named his father as James, and Mary named her father as Patrick. Thomas was 37 and Mary was 28 years old. Mary was born in Wicklow, Ireland in 1830.

Their second child; Mary, was born on the 20th of December 1860 in Paris Creek, SA. Elizabeth was the next child born on the 13th of November 1862 in Paris Creek. James Andrew was then born on the 14th of October 1864 in Paris Creek. Two years passed before Thomas Christopher was born on the 25th of December 1866. In June 1868 the Macclesfield Council allowed Thomas to have two of his children on destitute list at Tory Banks School, on condition that he sends three and pays for one. Their last child; Margaret, was born on the 16th of July 1870. In 1870, the Macclesfield Council granted Thomas permission to rent the reserve at Doctor’s Creek adjoining Section 2728.

In March 1874 two of their sons were riding a mare, the animal suddenly started off after its foal, throwing its loveable riders to the ground at Paris Creek. As a matter of course as they shared each other's joys, they clung together with a thorough brotherly embrace during their trial, and fell together. One escaped uninjured, while the other was rendered insensible for some time through falling on the side of his head.

On the 25th of March 1879, Thomas purchased Section 2728, Hundred of Macclesfield, containing 14 acres. This land is located at the end of Nyoka Road, now 105 Nyoka Road.

In 1880, Thomas was advised not to remove the fence at the Doctor’s Creek Reserve as it may be opened very shortly.

Thomas died on the 4th of April 1898, at his residence; Doctor’s Creek, aged 73, from Senile Decay and is buried in the Mt Barker Catholic Cemetery, SA. Mary died on the 9th of January 1900, aged 70 and is buried in the Mt Barker Catholic Cemetery, SA.

THOMAS COSGRAVE & Mary BYRNE had 6 children.

PATRICK PHILLIP COSGRAVE was born on the 19th of February 1858 in Paris Creek. Patrick attended the Paris Creek School and in 1871 to the leading prize in most branches of education. Patrick was living in Macclesfield in 1939 and was a labourer. Patrick died 17/08/1944 at Lourdes Valley, Glen Osmond, SA and is buried in the Mt Barker Catholic Cemetery.

MARY COSGRAVE was born on the 20th of December 1860 in Paris Creek. After the death of her mother, Mary, her sister Margaret and brother Thomas decided to move to Western Australia. On the 24th of April 1902 a farewell social was held in the Macclesfield Institute for them. They moved to the Treasure Lease in Kamballie. In 1925 Mary was living with her brother; James, at Hannan Star Lease, Kamballie and Mary was a domestic servant. They were still living here in 1936. In 1943 Mary was living with her brother; James, in Mt Barker, WA. Mary died on the 29th of September 1944 in Mt Barker, WA and is buried in the Mt Barker Cemetery, WA; Plot 319. Her Requiem Mass was held in the St Joseph’s Church. Mary never married and had no children.

ELIZABETH COSGRAVE was born on the 13th of November 1862 in Paris Creek. She married Levi DURBRIDGE on the 9th of November 1887 in the St Frances de Sales Church, Mt Barker, SA. Levi was the son of Levi DURBRIDGE & Ellen GRIMES and was born on the 3rd of July 1863 in Kingston, SA. They moved to Mundulla, SA when they married. They welcomed their first child into the family; Levi Thomas, on the 24th of June 1890 in Mundulla. Nearly two years passed before James Stanislaus was born on the 3rd of July 1892. Mary was the next child born on the 10th of December 1894, followed by Thomas Bernard on the 15th of June 1897. Ellen was born on the 18th of October 1899 and their last child; William Patrick Shaw, was born on the 6th of November 1902. Their eldest son Levi, enlisted into the 27th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on the 7th of February 1916 and 3 weeks later, Thomas Bernard enlisted into the 48th Battalion, 3 Reinforcment.

Levi embarked from Adelaide, on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 11th of April 1916 and Thomas embarked from Adelaide, on board HMAT A48 Seang Bee on the 13th of July 1916. Sadly, whilst serving in France, Levi died on the 9th of August 1918, from wounds he had received. They would have been very relieved when Thomas returned safely from the war on the 9th of February 1919. Levi died from cancer of the Larynx on the 9th of April 1920 in Mundulla and is buried in the Mundulla Cemetery. Elizabeth died on the 23rd of March 1929 in Mundulla and is buried in the Mundulla Cemetery.

JAMES ANDREW COSGRAVE was born on the 14th of October 1864 in Paris Creek. By 1903, James had joined his siblings at the Treasure Lease in Kamballie, WA and was a miner. On the 25th of October 1907, James and his brother; Thomas, purchased Section 2894, Hundred of Macclesfield, containing 16 acres. It appears that James was helping Thomas as he never returned from Western Australia. In 1925 James was living with his sister; Mary, at Hannan Star Lease, Kamballie and James was a miner. They were still living here in 1936.

In 1943 James was living with his sister; Mary, in Mt Barker, WA. James transferred the land to Thomas on the 25th of August 1944. James died on the 8th of August 1945 at his sister’s residence, Mrs Manion, and is buried in the Mt Barker Cemetery, WA; Plot 300, with his brother in-law, John MANION. James never married and had no children.

THOMAS CHRISTOPHER COSGRAVE was born on the 25th of December 1866 in Paris Creek. When his father died in 1898, Section 2728, Hundred of Macclesfield, was transferred to Thomas. After the death of his mother, Thomas and his sisters, Mary and Margaret decided to move to Western Australia. On the 24th of April 1902 a farewell social was held in the Macclesfield Institute for them. They moved to the Treasure Lease in Kamballie and Thomas was a miner. Thomas returned back to Macclesfield in 1907. On the 25th of October 1907, Thomas and his brother; James, purchased Section 2894, Hundred of Macclesfield, containing 16 acres. Thomas married Catherine Ann MCNAMARA on the 29th of May 1917 in the St James Catholic Church, Macclesfield. On the 10th of May 1941, Thomas transferred Section 2728, Hundred of Macclesfield, to his son, Phillip Brendan.

James transferred the land to Thomas on the 25th of August 1944 and is buried in the Macclesfield Cemetery; Catholic, Row 1, Plot 75. Catherine died on Monday evening, the 30th of June 1947 in the Strathalbyn Hospital. Thomas died on the 27th of July 1955 and is buried in the Macclesfield Cemetery; Catholic, Row 1, Plot 75, with Catherine.

MARGARET COSGRAVE was born on the 16th of July 1870 in Paris Creek. After the death of her mother, Margaret, her sister Mary and brother Thomas decided to move to Western Australia. On the 24th of April 1902 a farewell social was held in the Macclesfield Institute for them. They moved to the Treasure Lease in Kamballie. Margaret married John MANION (MANNING) on the 12th of August 1914 in the St Patrick’s Church, Havelock Street, West Perth. John was the son of Thomas MANNING (MANION) & Ann CONNOR (CONNAN) of Finnis, SA. John was born in Durban in 1863, South Africa, from whence his father, who was a soldier, was sent to New Zealand to fight in the Maori wars, afterwards retiring from the army to settle in South Australia, to which State his father then transferred his family and John spent his early manhood in Finniss, SA.

Around 1908, John moved to Western Australia and was first employed by Mr. W. W. Mitchell at "Langton" where he remained for 6 years. John then accepted employment at "Wicklow Estate" (1550 acre sheep farm on the Mt Barker (WA)– Porongurups Road). When they married, they remained on “Wicklow” for the next 22 years, 17 of them under Mr Ross Wallace. They bought a block of land in town, put a sturdy shed upon it and commenced the planting of a small orchard. In this work John was ably assisted by his wife, who accompanied him to town in the sulky for stores at week-ends, during which time the shed was their home. Giving at all times generous advice or assistance to those who sought it, John was noted for his unobtrusive kindness, for his upright character, and for staunch friendships.

In February 1936, Margaret’s niece, Sister Patricia Anne HICKS, arrived from Adelaide to visit her parents in Western Australia and she stayed with Margaret & John whilst she was in Western Australia. Patricia was the daughter of John’s sister, Elizabeth and Thomas Henry HICKS.

In the early 1940’s Margaret’s brother; James and sister; Mary moved to Mt Barker, WA. James lived with John & Margaret. John died on the 10th of July 1943 in the Mt Barker District Hospital, WA and is buried in the Mt Barker Cemetery, WA; Plot 299. It was noted that his many friends would keenly feel his loss, and there will be a general feeling of regret at the passing of such a fine spirit and exemplary citizen.

Margaret’s sister; Mary, died on the 29th of September 1944 and her brother James died on the 8th of August 1945. With no relatives in Western Australia, it appears that Margaret moved back to South Australia. She was living at “Little Sisters of Poor", at Cross Roads, Glen Osmond. Margaret died on the 16th of April 1954 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital, from multiple injuries received in a vehicle accident at the corner of South Terrace and King William Street on the 11th of April. Her body was identified by her nephew, Mr William Patrick Shaw DURBRIDGE. William was a school teacher, residing at 38 Nelson Street, Kilburn at the time Margaret & John never had children.

ELIZABETH COSGRAVE & Levi DURBRIDGE had 6 children

LEVI THOMAS DURBRIDGE was born on the 24th of June 1890 in Mundulla, SA. Levi was educated at the Mundulla School. He was a labourer. Levi enlisted into the 27th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on the 7th of February 1916 in Mundulla and was allotted the service number 4702. He listed his mother as his next of kin.

He embarked from Adelaide on board the HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 11th of April 1916. They completed further training at the 7th Training Battalion in England. They embarked for Etaples on the 24th of September and by the 2nd of October were in Belgium. In early November the 27th Battalion was involved in a major action at Flers, just to the south east of Pozieres. On the 9th of June 1917 Levi was accidentally wounded, receiving a gun shot wound to his right leg in Rifle grenade practice. He was admitted to the Rouen Hospital and rejoined his Battalion in Belgium on the 30th of July. The Battalion then moved to Ypres. On the 5th of October 1917, Levi received a gun shot wound to his back and was admitted to hospital in Trouville. Twenty One days later, he rejoined his Battalion. At the beginning of August 1918 his Battalion were in the Framerville area in France at the Green Line. On the 9th of August 1918, Levi received a shell wound to his head and was admitted to the 7th Australian Field Ambulance. Levi died from his wounds the same day and was buried in the Santerre Communal Cemetery, 4¾ miles south east of Corbie. In 1919 Levi was exhumed and reburied in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, France; Plot XIX, Row F, Grave No. I.

JAMES STANISLAUS DURBRIDGE was born on the 3rd of July 1892 in Mundulla, SA. He married Jeanetta Matilda JOLLY on the 21st of May 1912 in the Methodist Church, Wolseley, SA. Jeanetta was the daughter of John Buckingham JOLLY & Harriet Emily LITTLE and was born on the 10th of February 1891 in Wolseley, SA. They had 12 children. Jeanetta died suddenly, as a result of a heart attack on the 4th of October 1942 in Wolseley and is buried in the Bordertown Cemetery; Plot 144E, next to her father. James died on the 1st of June 1871 in Woodville and is buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery.

MARY DURBRIDGE was born on the 10th of December 1894 in Mundulla, SA. She married Edward Andrew NAUGHTON on the 13th of September 1919 in the St Thomas’s Church, Naracoorte, SA. Edward was the son of James NAUGHTON & Mary DEMPSEY and was born on the 16th of June 1897 in Gumbowie, SA. They lived at 4 Albion Avenue, Glandore and Edward was a tram conductor. They had 3 sons. Edward died on the 12th of April 1852 in Glandore and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery. Mary died on the 9th of December 1983 and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery.

THOMAS BERNARD DURBRIDGE was born on the 15th of June 1897 in Mundulla, SA. Thomas was a farm hand. Thomas enlisted into the 48th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement on the 29th of February 1916 in Mundulla and was allotted the service number 1906. He listed his mother as his next of kin. He embarked from Adelaide on board the HMAT A48 Seang Bee on the 13th of July 1916. They completed further training in England before embarking for Etaples on the 21st of November 1916. In June 1917 the Battalion was located at Messines. On the 10th of June 1917, Thomas received a gun shot wound to his right knee and was admitted to the Eastbourne Medical Hospital. He spent the next 4 months in hospital recovering before proceeding back to France in mid October, to rejoin his Battalion at Passchendale Ridge. By April 1918 they were located at Millencourt and then moved onto Albert. On the 6th of April 1918 Thomas was reported missing in action, 6 weeks later it was reported that he was a POW in Limburg Lahn Camp, Germany. (POW number 1138).

Thomas was repatriated to England on the 2nd of December 1918 and admitted to the Fulham Military Hospital in Hammersmith suffering from inflammation of his feet. Thomas returned to Australia on the 9th of February 1919. Thomas was discharged on the 5th of May 1919. Thomas married Lilian Audrey ROWE on the 30th of April 1947 in the Methodist Church, Naracoorte, SA. Lilian was the daughter of Frank Howard ROWE & Edith Jane SCHILLING and was born on the 13th of November 1916 in Kadina, SA. In 1954 they lived in Harrow, VIC. They had 4 daughters. Thomas died on the 4th of December 1969 in Coleraine and is buried in the Coleraine Cemetery, VIC. Lilian died on the 7th of September 2012 in Warrnambool and is buried in the Coleraine Cemetery, VIC.

ELLEN DURBRIDGE was born on the 18th of October 1899 in Mundulla, SA. She married Wilfred Francis George GOLDING on the 8th of May 1928 in Naracoorte, SA. Wilfred was the son of Stephen GOLDING & Mary Annie WESTOVER and was born on the 27th of June 1898 in Stirling, SA. Wilfred had previously enlisted into the 10th Battalion, 22nd Reinforcement on the 3rd of October 1916 and was allotted the service number 6757.

Wilfred was a horse driver and was living in Kensington. Prior to his enlistment he had served as a senior cadet with the 79th Infantry Battalion. He embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A19 Afric on the 7th of November 1916, disembarking in Plymouth, England. He was further entrained at the 3rd Training Battalion in Durrington. Whilst in Durrignton, he was admitted to Parkhouse Hospital suffering from Mumps. On the 14th of May 1917, they proceeded to France. Between October 1917 and January 1918, he was in and out of Graylingwell War Hospital suffering from trench fever. On the 16th of April 1918, Wilfred was transferred to the Australian Corps Signal Company and embarked back to France on the 3rd of May 1918. The following month he contracted Influenza and was hospitalised for 18 days. Wilfred returned to Australia on the 4th of July 1919 and was discharged on the 22nd of September 1919. During the time that Wilfred was serving, his parents moved to Bordertown, SA. They had 2 children. Wilfred died on the 22nd of June 1967 and is buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery. Ellen died on the 12th of December 1990 and is buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery.

WILLIAM PATRICK SHAW DURBRIDGE was born on the 6th of November 1902 in Mundulla, SA. He married Ruby Janet JOHNSON on the 27th of February 1930 in the St Thomas’s RC Church, Naracoorte, SA. Ruby was born in 1905. They had 2 children. William died on the 23rd of August 1996 in Adelaide. He was cremated and interred in the Cheltenham Cemetery.

MANION (MANNING) Family Tree

Thomas MANNING (MANION) & Ann CONNOR (CONNAN) of Finniss arrived by 1868

Thomas was born in 1839 and Ann was born in 1836.

In 1863 they lived in Durban, South Africa. They welcomed their first child, John, into the family in 1863 in Durban.

Thomas was a soldier, was sent to New Zealand to fight in the Maori wars, afterwards retiring from the army to settle in South Australia, to which State his father then transferred his family.
They moved to a little town called Queen’s Own Town (now Finniss).

Their second child; William, was born on the 8th of June 1868 in Finniss. Mary Therese was born in 1871.

On the 15th of October 1873, Thomas purchased Section 2034 in the Hundred of Kondoparinga, containing 48 acres. Section 2034 is a triangle shaped property, located on the northern corner of Signal Flat Road and Reserve Road, Finniss. It runs approximately 600m up Signal Flat Rd and 500m along Reserve Rd. ( -35.362743, 138.810085) (now 1065 Signal Flat Road)

Rosina (Rosanna) MANNING was born on the 5th of February 1874

In the late 1870’s a party of rabbit catchers at the Finniss gave Thomas a puppy that was only three days old. “How to rear it was the question”, so as an experiment, all but one of a litter of kittens that were two days old were destroyed and the puppy was introduced as a substitute. The cat had no objection, and it seems she was as fond of the puppy as of her own offspring. In July 1875 the General Meeting of the Finniss Ratepayers was held at Thomas and Ann’s home.

Their next child; Eliza, was born in 1876 in Finniss and their last child; Thomas, was born on the 1st of July 1878.

On the 1st of June 1881 Thomas purchased Section 2051 in the Hundred of Kondoparinga, containing 116 acres. Section 2051 is a rectangular property and is located on the southern side of the Alexandrina Road, Finniss, approximately 800m to the west of Giles Creek Road. The boundary runs for 700m and stops 150m before Reserve Rd. The property is 500m deep.

On the 10th of April 1893, Ann purchased Part Section 2048 in the Hundred of Kondoparinga, containing 4 acres. Section 2048 is a rectangular property and is located on the northern side of the Alexandrina Road, Finniss, (but is set back at least 1km from Alexandrina Road). The land would only have been accessible by the old government Road which runs along the west boundary of Section 2046.

On the 17th of May 1894, Ann purchased Section 2046 in the Hundred of Kondoparinga, containing 112 acres. Section 2046 is a rectangular property and is located on the northern side of the Alexandrina Road, Finniss, approximately 800m to the east of Giles Creek Road. The boundary runs for 800m and stops at Giles Creek Rd. The property is 500m deep.

Thomas sold Section 2051 to his son, William on the 1st of April 1910.

Ann died on the 11th of December 1917, aged 81, at their residence in Finniss and is buried in the Strathalbyn Cemetery; Catholic Section.

Thomas died on the 4th of December 1922, aged 83, at his residence, Finniss, and is buried in the Strathalbyn Cemetery; Catholic Section.

Thomas named William & Rosina the executors of his will and Sections 2034, 2046 & 2048 were transferred to them. When William died, Rosina included her siblings, Thomas & Mary on the Title. They sold the family property on the 5th of July 1940.

Margaret died on the 16th of April 1954 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital, from multiple injuries received in a vehicle accident at the corner of South Terrace and King William Street on the 11th of April. Her body was identified by her nephew, Mr William Patrick Shaw DURBRIDGE. William was a school teacher, residing at 38 Nelson Street, Kilburn at the time Margaret & John never had children.

WILLIAM MANNING was born on the 8th of June 1868 in Finniss. In March 1905, William met with a painful accident while riding near the police station. To avoid collision with a wagon coming round the corner he took a sharp turn, and his horse slipping, he was thrown against the vehicle and onto the ground, his right wrist coming into contact with the edge of the wheel nave, a nasty gash being inflicted, for which several stitches were necessary. Besides this William received some ugly bruises. William purchased part of his father’s property, Section 2051 in the Hundred of Kondoparinga, containing 116 acres, on the 1st of April 1910. In 1912, William was on the committee of the Finniss Liberal Union. At the meeting a motion was carried that steps be taken to have the town’s name of “Queens Own Town” changed to “Finniss”. In April 1926, William was on the committee of the Finniss School. In June 1926, William was elected Councillor of the Finniss Ward. In December 1928 William and James O’CONNOR purchased the first portion of Section 2604, Hundred of Strathalbyn (Strathalbyn South) containing 8 acres – now known as Edinburgh Grove. They also purchased Allotment 5 and a portion of Allotments 3 & 4 in Section 2604, Hundred of Strathalbyn. (Strathalbyn South), located on Colman Street. It appears Colman Street was renamed in the 1980’s, as it is now known as Adams Street. # Allotment 3 is now known as 3 Adams Street. # Allotment 4 is now known as 5 Adams Street. # Allotment 5 is now known as 7 Adams Street. In 1933 William purchased Allotment 7 in Section 2604, Hundred of Strathalbyn. (Strathalbyn South), located on Colman Street (next to his other properties) # Allotment 7 is now known as 9 Adams Street. In 1935, William transferred Allotment 7 to his sister, Mary, who at the time was still living at Finniss. He was still living in Finniss in 1936. William died on the 7th of October 1938 and is buried in the Strathalbyn Cemetery; Catholic Section. His siblings, Thomas & Mary were the executors of his will and they added Rosina to the Title. They sold Section 2051 in the Hundred of Kondoparinga on the 5th of July 1940. William never married and he never had children.

MARY THERESE MANNING was born in 1871. In 1935, her brother, William transferred Allotment 7 in Colman Street, Strathalbyn to her. (Allotment 7 is now known as 9 Adams Street). Mary was still living at Finniss at the time. In 1941 she lived with her siblings, Thomas & Rosina in Colman Street (Adams Street), Strathalbyn. On the 29th of April 1953, Mary left Strathalbyn with her niece, Patricia (Mrs John FILOSE), to join her sister, Mrs Elizabeth HICKS in Perth. A luminous crucifix was the gift was presented by the parishioners of the Good Shepherd Church, Strathalbyn, accompanied by the following framed testimonial:—"Dear Miss Manning. We ask you to accept this luminous crucifix as a token of our appreciation for the loyalty and devotion of the Manning family to the Church. On the eve of your departure to W.A., we offer you our good wishes and sincerely commend you to the protection of the Immaculate Mother of God." On the 26th of July 1954, Mary transferred Allotment 7 in Colman Street to her nephew, John Manning HICKS. Mary died on the 21st of July 1956 in Perth and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Catholic OC, Plot 0345. Mary never married and she never had children.

ROSINA (ROSANNA) MANNING was born on the 5th of February 1874 in Finniss, SA. In 1941 she lived with her siblings, Thomas & Mary in Colman Street (Adams Street), Strathalbyn. Rosina died on the 6th of July 1952 in the Strathalbyn Soldiers Memorial Hospital and is buried in the Strathalbyn Cemetery; Catholic Section. Rosina never married and she never had children.

ELIZA MANNING was born in 1876 in Finniss, SA. Around 1908, her brother; John moved to Western Australia, so it is likely that Eliza moved with him. Eliza married Thomas Henry HICKS in 1908 in Perth. Eliza died on the 13th of March 1964 # Refer HICKS Tree THOMAS MANION (MANNING) was born on the 1st of July 1878 in Queens Own Town (Finniss), SA. His birth was registered in Strathalbyn. In 1941 he lived with his sisters, Mary & Rosina in Colman Street (Adams Street), Strathalbyn. Thomas died on the 14th of May 1947 in Strathalbyn. His funeral was held in the Roman Catholic Church in Strathalbyn and he was buried in the RC Section of the Strathalbyn Cemetery. Thomas never married and he never had children.

THOMAS HENRY HICKS was born on the 1st of July 1875. Thomas married Eliza MANNING in 1908 in Perth. Eliza was the daughter of Thomas MANNING (MANION) & Ann CONNOR (CONNAN) and the sister in law of Margaret MANION nee COSGRAVE (buried in Macclesfield Cemetery). In 1910 they lived at 138 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth and Thomas was a labourer employed by the Western Australian Railways. In 1913 they lived at 24 Colin Street, West Perth and in 1921 they lived at 35 Colin Crescent, West Perth. They welcomed their first child, Mary Helena, followed by Patricia Anne in 1911 in Perth. Frederick Thomas was born the following year on the 29th of June 1912 in Perth. Rachel Veronica was the next child born into the family. On the 14th of August 1918 John (Jack) was born in Perth (Shelley’s father). Their last child; Carmel Elizabeth, was born in 1920 in Perth. In 1931 they lived at 409 Newcastle Street, West Perth. Thomas died, aged 61, on the 20th of December 1936, at his residence; 409 Newcastle Street, West Perth and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Catholic, Section HA, Plot 0459. After Thomas’s death, Eliza moved to 116 St Leonard’s Avenue, Leederville with her daughter Rachael. In 1954 Eliza was living at 116 St Leonard’s Avenue, Leederville with her daughter Carmel. On the 29th of April 1953, Eliza’s sister, Mary left Strathalbyn with her niece, Mrs J FILOSE, to join Eliza in Perth. In 1958 Eliza was living at 5 Bouverie Street, Leederville with her daughter’s Carmel & Rachel & son in-law, Richard REEVE . Eliza died on the 13th of March 1964 in Leederville and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Catholic, Section HA, Plot 0459, with Thomas.

Generation 2 Thomas Henry HICKS & Eliza MANNING had 6 children

MARY HELENA HICKS was born in 1909 in Perth. She married Stephen Henry OSBORNE in 1935 in Perth. Stephen was the son of Stephen OSBORNE & Emily Jane SOUTHWOOD and was born on the 6th of November 1903 in Greenwich, Kent, England. In 1937 they lived at 41 Bronte Street, East Perth. Stephen enlisted into the 2/1st Australian Machine Gun Training Battalion on the 7th of November 1939 in Subiaco and was allotted the service number WX467. Stephen was discharged on the 25th of January 1944. In 1949 they lived at 418 Newcastle Street, North Perth with Mary’s sister and brother in-law, John & Patricia FILOSE. By 1954 they had moved to 59 King George Street, Innaloo and Stephen was a gas fitter. Stephen died on the 11th of April 1966 in Innaloo and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Catholic, Lawn 4, Plot 0332. Mary remained in the family home for over 20 years after Stephen died. Mary died on the 2nd of May 1995 in Maylands and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Catholic, Lawn 4, Plot 0332, with Stephen.

PATRICIA ANNE HICKS was born in 1911 in Perth In February 1936, Sister (nurse) Patricia Anne HICKS, arrived from Adelaide to visit her parents in Western Australia and she stayed with her Auntie & Uncle, Margaret & John MANION, whilst she was in Western Australia. Patricia married John Clement FILOSE on the 17th of February 1944. John was the son of Major Sir Clement Augustine FILOSE & Maria SHEEHAN and was born in Dublin, Ireland on the 23rd of March 1906. His parents were married in India. His father was the son of Florence & Marie Ann FILOSE and was born in 1853 in Gwalior, Madha Pradesh, India. His mother was born on the 20th of September 1870 in Missouri, USA. His father served in Scindia’s Army and Military Secretary to His Highness the Maharajah of Gwalior. John had arrived in Fremantle on the 4th of May 1929 on board the “Esperance Bay” from Southampton, England. John had enlisted into the RAAF on the 28th of May 1941 in Perth and was allotted the service number 38800 and served with 76 Squadron. John was discharged on the 27th of November 1945. They lived at 81 Trafalger Road, East Perth. They welcomed their only child into the family; Michael John, on the 26th of September 1946. In 1949 they lived at 418 Newcastle Street, North Perth and John was a milk carter (truck driver). In 1952 they lived at 52 Northwood Street, Leederville and John was a hospital orderly. 1963 Soon after Patricia’s mother died, they moved to 15 Vera Street, Morley. Patricia died on the 27th of February 1993 in Morley and is buried in the Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park; Acacia Court, Plot 5235. John died on the 8th of May 1995 and is buried in the Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park; Acacia Court, Plot 5235, with Patricia.

FREDERICK THOMAS HICKS was born on the 29th of June 1912 in Perth. In 1937 he was still living at home with his mother & 2 siblings, 409 Newcastle Street, West Perth. He was a dairy farmer living in Rosa Brook. He enlisted into the 5th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps on the 9th of May 1942 (with his brother John) and was allotted the service number W70323. By 1977 he had moved to 28 Odin Road, Innaloo and was living with his sister Carmel. Frederick died on the 3rd of September 1985 in Innaloo and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Lawn, Section H, Plot 0261, with his sister’s, Carmel & Rachel REEVE. Frederick never married and had no children.

RACHEL VERONICA HICKS was born in 1914 in Perth. In 1937 she was still living at home with her mother & 2 siblings, 409 Newcastle Street, West Perth. She married Richard Gordon REEVE in 1942. Richard was the son of Richard REEVE GEE (Alias REEVE) & Minnie AUSTIN and was born on the 10th of August 1905 in Osborne Park, WA. His father died when he was 11 months old and his mother remarried to George Victor DAY in 1908. Richard had previously enlisted into the 124 Australian General Transport Company on the 29th of January 1942. Richard was discharged on the 16th of October 1945. Richard was a gardener. In 1958 they were living at 5 Bouverie Street, Leederville with Rachel’s mother Eliza and sister Carmel. By 1972 Rachel & Richard had moved to 11 Wyeree Road, Mandurah. Richard died on the 5th of March 1975 in Mandurah, WA and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Catholic, Lawn 9, Plot 0734. After Richards’s death, Rachel moved to 28 Odin Road, Innaloo and was living with her brother Frederick and sister Carmel. She remained living here until she died. Rachel died on the 1st of August 1994 in Innaloo and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Catholic, Lawn 9, Plot 0734, with Richard. * I have not been able to find any children.

*JOHN (Jack) MANNING HICKS was born on the 14th of August 1918 in Perth. In 1937 he was still living at home with his mother & 2 siblings, 409 Newcastle Street, West Perth. John was a dairy farmer. He enlisted into the 5th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps on the 2nd of May 1942 in Margaret River, WA and was allotted the service number W70324. He listed his mother Eliza, of 300 Newcastle Street, Perth as his next of kin. When John enlisted he was living at Rosa Brook, WA, and his address was C/- W. J. BRENNAN On the 18th of June 1948, John purchased Allotments 22, 23, 24 & 25 in Hooper Road, Strathalbyn. # Allotment 22 is now 10 Hooper Road # Allotment 23 is now 8 Hooper Road # Allotment 24 is now 6 Hooper Road # Allotment 25 is now 4 Hooper Road In March 1952, John was approved to build a garage on Lot 23 (8 Hooper Road). In May 1952, John was advertising fresh cut vegetables and ready to lay pullets in Hooper Road. On the 26th of July 1954, his aunty, Mary MANION transferred Allotment 7 in Colman Street (9 Adams Street) to John. John sold Allotment 24 (6 Hooper Road) in May 1969 and Allotment 25 (4 Hooper Road) in February 1969. He later sold Allotment 23 (8 Hooper Road) in September 1970 and twelve months later he sold Allotment 22 (10 Hooper Road). On the 1st of October 1974, John sold Allotment 3 (3 Adams Street) & Allotment 5 (7 Adams Street) in Section 2604, Hundred of Strathalbyn. (Strathalbyn South). It appears Colman Street was renamed in the 1980’s, as it is now known as Adams Street. John sold Allotment 7 (9 Adams Street) in June 1974. John died on the 25th of January 2005 in Strathalbyn, SA and is buried in the Strathalbyn Cemetery; Catholic Section.

CARMEL ELIZABETH HICKS was born in 1920 in Perth. In 1954 Carmel was living at 116 St Leonard’s Avenue, Leederville with her mother Eliza. In 1958 Carmel was living at 5 Bouverie Street, Leederville with her mother Eliza, sister Rachel & brother in-law, Richard REEVE . She remained with her sister and brother in-law at 5 Bouverie Street, Leederville after her mother died. By 1977 she had moved to 28 Odin Road, Innaloo and was living with her brother Frederick and sister Rachel REEVE. She remained living here until her death. Carmel died on the 27th of February 1995 in Innaloo and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Lawn, Section H, Plot 0261, with her brother, Frederick. Carmel never married and never had children.

Patricia Anne HICKS & John Clement FILOSE

MICHAEL JOHN FILOSE was born on the 26th of September 1946. In 1968 he was living with his parents at 15 Vera Street, Morley and he was a boot maker. Michael was still living with his parents in 1980. It appears that Michael never married.
